Sgt. E5 in the Marine Corps, serving as door gunner during three tours in Vietnam from 1966-1969.

{ May 24, 1947 - July 18, 2014 }

    Henry (Hank) Porter was born May 24, 1947 in Waterloo, Iowa and passed from this life on July 18, 2014, at his home in Olive Branch, Mississippi. Henry graduated at Westwood High School in Memphis, Tennessee in 1965. He joined the Marine Corps in 1965 and served three tours in Vietnam as a Door gunner (1966-1969). He was a sports reporter for the DeSoto County Tribune in Olive Branch, Mississippi.

    Henry was known for many things but the most important thing to remember was his fun-loving spirit and the ability to always find the best in any situation. He was a wonderful husband, #1 Dad in the world and best grandpa a child could ask for and most of all, a stellar Marine! Always remember Hank for the good times and cherish his memories forever.

    He leaves his wife of 33 years, Cheryl Porter of Olive Branch; one son, Hamilton Tyler Porter Sr. (Sonni Elaine) of Olive Branch; one daughter, Sgt. Ashley Brooke Porter of Camp Shelby; mother, Helen I. Porter of Horn Lake; one sister, Lillian K. Porter Skaggs (Johnny E.) of Horn Lake; and two grandchildren, A.J. Berkley and Hamilton Tyler Porter Jr. He was preceded in death by his father, Henry DeWitt Porter Sr.

The arrangements for Henry were in care of Twin Oaks Funeral Home in Southaven.

The family requests that any memorials be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
